Wat kost een huurauto op Curaçao in 2026?

A daily rate tells you very little if you don’t know what is not included. We break down a full fourteen-day trip, including fuel, parking, and the extra costs that may only appear at the rental desk.
The question of how much a rental car costs in Curaçao is harder to answer than it seems. Not because the prices are unclear, but because the daily rate you see online is rarely the final amount you end up paying. Insurance, excess, airport surcharges, and fuel policies can easily add up to half of the rental price. In this article, we calculate the realistic total cost of a fourteen-day trip.
Daily price by car class
In Curaçao, daily rental prices in 2026 are roughly as follows, based on a rental period of one week or longer. Shorter rental periods are usually more expensive per day, and during the high season (December to April), rates at major rental companies can be around twenty to forty percent higher.
Car Class | Local Rental Company | International Chain | Difference per 14 Days |
Economy — compact city car | US$ 35–45 | US$ 55–75 | approx. US$ 300 |
Compact — comfortable hatchback | US$ 44–55 | US$ 70–90 | approx. US$ 370 |
Compact SUV | US$ 53–65 | US$ 85–110 | approx. US$ 450 |
Sedan — spacious mid-size car | US$ 58–70 | US$ 90–115 | approx. US$ 450 |
4x4 / pickup | US$ 79–95 | US$ 120–160 | approx. US$ 570 |
The pattern is consistent: the larger the car, the greater the absolute price difference between a local rental company and an international chain. This is because the fixed costs of an international chain — an airport desk, staff working in shifts, and international systems — are passed on per rental day, regardless of the type of car.
Costs that are not included in the daily rate
This is where the real difference arises between the price you expect and the price you actually pay. These are the costs you should specifically ask about when comparing rental companies.
Excess and reducing the excess
Almost every rental car in Curaçao comes with comprehensive insurance and an excess of between $500 and $1,500. At the rental desk, you may then be offered additional coverage to reduce or waive the excess, often for $15 to $25 per day.
Over fourteen days, that can add $210 to $350 — sometimes more than half the rental price itself. Local rental companies generally charge around $7 to $10 per day for this.
Credit card deposit
A deposit is not technically a cost, but it can still be a real inconvenience. Amounts of $500 to $1,500 may be blocked on your credit card, sometimes for the entire rental period and even for several weeks afterward.
That is spending capacity you cannot use during your vacation. Rental companies that do not require a deposit — often local providers — eliminate this issue completely.
Airport surcharge
Rental companies with a desk inside the arrivals hall at Hato Airport pay concession fees to the airport and usually pass these costs on to customers, often as a surcharge of 10% to 18% of the rental amount.
Rental companies that deliver the car outside the terminal do not have these costs.
Fuel policy
Full-to-full is the fairest policy: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank.
Some rental companies use a prepaid fuel policy at a rate above the normal pump price, and you do not receive a refund for unused fuel. Ask about this specifically, as the difference can be around $30 to $50 per rental.
A complete cost calculation: fourteen days, two people
Suppose you are traveling with two people and spending fourteen days in Curaçao, staying in Jan Thiel and planning to explore the entire island, including Westpunt and Christoffel Park. You choose a comfortable hatchback with automatic transmission and air conditioning.
Cost Item | Local Rental Company | International Chain |
14-day rental | US$ 616 | US$ 1,120 |
Excess reduction | US$ 98 | US$ 280 |
Airport surcharge | US$ 0 | US$ 168 |
Additional driver | US$ 0 | US$ 140 |
Child seat (if needed) | US$ 0 | US$ 84 |
Fuel (approx. 450 km) | US$ 55 | US$ 55 |
Parking (Punda, Mambo) | US$ 25 | US$ 25 |
Total | US$ 794 | US$ 1,872 |
The difference of more than one thousand dollars is not an extreme example but a fairly normal outcome, and most of it does not come from the daily rate but from the additional charges. On top of that, the international rental company may still block $500 to $1,000 on your credit card.
How much does fuel cost in Curaçao?
In 2026, gasoline in Curaçao costs around US$1.05 to US$1.20 per liter, which is clearly less than in the Netherlands. The island is about 60 kilometers long, and a full day of driving — Willemstad, Westpunt, Christoffel Park, and back — adds up to around 130 kilometers. For a compact car, you can expect to spend about $10 on fuel for that trip.
Two weeks of normal vacation driving, including a few longer day trips and daily journeys between your accommodation, the beaches, and the city, will usually cost between $45 and $70 in total for fuel. Gas stations can be found near Sta. Maria, in Salinja, around Kaya Flamboyan, and near Barber on the way to Westpunt.
Is renting a car cheaper than taking taxis?
Taxis in Curaçao generally use fixed rates and are relatively expensive. A one-way trip from Jan Thiel to Willemstad costs around $25 to $30, Willemstad to Westpunt can cost $70 or more, and Hato Airport to Jan Thiel is around $35. Two taxi rides per day can already cost more than the daily rental price of a compact car.
In practice, the break-even point is around one outing per day: if you want to see more than just the beach next to your hotel, a rental car is almost always cheaper and more flexible.
When should you book for the best price?
Curaçao has a clear high season from December to April, with additional peaks during Dutch summer and May school holidays. During these periods, the island is busier and rental fleets can sell out. International rental companies often use dynamic pricing, meaning the same car may cost twice as much in February as it does in September.
High season (December–April): Book two to four weeks in advance, especially for SUVs and automatic cars.
Dutch school holidays: Expect a similar pattern, with an additional peak around the May holiday.
Low season (May–November): A few days in advance is usually enough, and rates are generally lower.
Rental companies without a down payment: Booking early usually costs you nothing, so waiting rarely offers an advantage.
What to look for when comparing rental companies
Never compare rental companies based on the daily rate alone. Ask each provider specifically about four things: how much deposit is blocked, what the insurance excess is and how much it costs to reduce it, whether an airport surcharge applies, and which fuel policy is used.
Only once you have those four answers can you make a fair comparison — and the ranking between rental companies often changes completely.
