What kind of car do you really need in Curaçao?

Most visitors rent a larger car than they actually need. We’ll go through what works for each type of traveler and when extra ground clearance is really worth the money.
Of all the questions we receive on WhatsApp, this is the most common: do I need an SUV, or is a small car enough? The simple answer is that most visitors to Curaçao rent a larger car than their trip actually requires. Over a two-week rental, that can easily cost around $300 extra without giving you much added benefit.
What it really depends on
The deciding factor is not the number of people or the amount of luggage, but the type of roads you plan to drive on. Curaçao generally has three types of roads: paved main roads that are suitable for any car, short unpaved roads leading to beaches where careful driving is enough, and rougher routes around Christoffel Park and Shete Boka where extra ground clearance can be useful.
Staying mainly around Willemstad, Jan Thiel, Mambo Beach, and Pietermaai? Any compact car will be enough.
Planning to visit Westpunt, Playa Kenepa, and Playa Lagun? A compact car is still perfectly suitable, as long as you drive carefully on the final unpaved sections.
Going into Christoffel Park or exploring the rougher north coast? A compact SUV with extra ground clearance is the better choice.
Traveling with four adults plus luggage? Then space, rather than off-road capability, is the main reason to choose a larger vehicle.
By type of traveler
Couple, one or two weeks, staying in Jan Thiel or Mambo
A compact city car with automatic transmission and air conditioning is the most practical choice. Two suitcases will fit, parking in Punda is easy, fuel consumption is low, and you pay the lowest daily rate. Even a day trip to Westpunt is no problem. We recommend this option much more often than people expect.
Family with two children
Here, luggage space and rear-seat comfort matter more than off-road ability. A comfortable hatchback or spacious sedan works well: four suitcases plus beach gear will fit, and the air conditioning keeps the rear seats comfortable too. Child seats are sometimes included by local rental companies, so it is worth asking about this in advance.
Active travelers who want to explore the entire island
If you plan to visit Christoffel Park, drive toward Shete Boka, and explore less accessible beaches, a compact SUV gives you more confidence on rougher roads. You may pay around $10 more per day than for a hatchback, but in this situation the extra cost can be worthwhile.
Four or five adults
With four adults or more plus luggage, a spacious sedan or larger SUV is usually the more comfortable option. A compact car with five people and suitcases may work on paper, but it is much less practical in real life, especially in Curaçao’s warm climate.
What you really should not skip
Automatic transmission: Traffic in Willemstad can be stop-and-go, and the hills around Jan Thiel can make manual driving tiring. Most rental cars on the island are automatic, but it is still worth checking.
Strong air conditioning: Curaçao’s heat and humidity make reliable air conditioning essential.
Unlimited mileage: The island may be small, but you often drive more than expected. Mileage limits can quickly become expensive.
Phone holder or navigation support: Addresses in Curaçao can sometimes be unclear, so reliable navigation is extremely useful.
Do you need a 4x4?
For most visitors, no. A true 4x4 is mainly useful if you are traveling with a larger group, carrying diving or surf equipment, or specifically planning to explore rougher parts of the island. For a typical holiday itinerary — beaches, the city, and the main routes around Christoffel Park — a compact SUV is usually more than enough.
We regularly tell customers that the cheapest car in our fleet is perfectly suitable for their trip. It may mean a smaller booking for us, but it is one of the reasons customers come back.
